Modern life can tune out God’s frequency. Here’s how to tune back in.

But first, what IS God’s frequency?

If you’re on a spiritual journey to hear from God, the first step is knowing how to tune into His frequency. To tune into His frequency, it’s reasonable to first be able to define it. However, I have to warn you that this may not be possible, because the definition isn’t something tangible that you can recognize unless you experience it first hand. I could sit here and write a book about God’s frequency, but unless you’ve already felt it, my words will be empty platitudes. So I’m going to focus on how you can tune in and find it for yourself. Then you’ll know what it is. The definition, as you’ll hopefully discover, is in the Holy Spirit and in God’s direct communication with you.

The first step to tuning into God is tuning out the world. He made the world, and and He made us to live in it, but we aren’t of the world, because we are not just walking, talking flesh. We are spirits, with bodies, minds and souls. Some would say our mind, body, and spirit together is what makes a soul, but that’s a post of its own.

To tune out the world so your spirit can receive from your Creator, first consider how detached or connected you are, on a daily basis, to His creation. Cities tend to detach people from God’s Earth, while rural living and being close to nature can help us get closer to God. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a deep spiritual life and communion with God if you live in a big city, but it does tend to make it more difficult, so do what you can to spend some time outdoors, even if it’s just sitting under a tree for a while.

God is everywhere, all the time. He is in the air, the wind, the calls of animals, the flow of a river, the blades of grass or grains of sand under your feet.

God is everywhere, all the time. He is in the air, the wind, the calls of animals, the flow of a river, the blades of grass or grains of sand under your feet. Too much concrete can keep us from sensing this. I’m fortunate enough to live in a rural area, on a hillside backed into an avocado grove. Sometimes when I’m deep in prayer, I will look over and notice that the leaves on the trees are subtly, gently vibrating. I recognize God in this. Sometimes we may think of Him as having a loud, booming voice – and He does – but He is also quiet, and can appear in the from of the softest whisper and the faintest tremble of a leaf.

If you’ve ever been praying or even just sitting quietly, and heard a pleasant sound like a distant wind chime in the breeze, or the flutter of the wings of a bird landing on a nearby branch, and it made you feel an emotion, that is God calling you to come spend time with Him. When you sense this, simply say, “Heavenly Father, here I am. I’m listening, Please Holy Spirit help me tune in to my Father’s frequency, in the name of Jesus.”

Turn Off Your Phone. Really.

Your phone has its own frequency, and as you probably know, it isn’t God’s. It’s full of electronic signals, instead. It’s a useful tool, but you need time away from it. Not only does your physical body need time away from it, but your spirit does, too. Why? Because, again, we are spirits. What’s on our phones is the world, and its issues and its messages.

I noticed that I had developed a bad habit over a period of years, where I was going to bed with my phone and scrolling and scrolling Instagram. Upon waking, I did the same thing. Finally, I ended up getting banned from Instagram one day (they claim I posted spam, and to appeal, I’d need to go through a process, yet they made it too difficult to actually do. That’s IG for ya).

But you know what? me getting banned was a good thing. It was one of the best things that could have happened! I started sleeping better. I started waking up and spending time with God before starting my day. I became more productive. I don’t miss Instagram. Now, at night after 9 p.m., I silence my phone (leaving only emergency alerts and family on) and place it all the way across the room.

Obviously, it isn’t just being in nature and turning off our phones that are going to tune us in to God’s frequency, but both are excellent starting points because we are eliminating distractions and becoming more intimate with His creation, which is an extension of Him. And we are tuning out the world, with its incessant noise. Most of what’s on our phones is just that – noise.

When I think about God’s frequency, I always am reminded of this passage from 1 Kings 19:11-13:

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
