power punches in boxing

Power Punch vs Authority: What’s the Difference?

In boxing, there is a difference between a power punch and a volume punch.

With volume style punching, you’re working more punches in with speed, usually using longer combos. This style of punching is mostly used in order to overwhelm the other guy with a large number of shots. It can also get your opponent to put up his defensive shell, creating potential opportunities. Volume punching with speed can also be more fatiguing for the defense, as slipping or parrying multiple punches takes energy.

Power punches, on the other hand, do a lot more damage – but they also take more energy. A power punch is exactly what it sounds like, and is usually used after a fighter has gotten in some speedier, volume style punches.

Speed/volume and power punches are equally useful, but they are used for different intents. Its true that some fighters rely more heavily on one style over the other. Mike Tyson, for example, is known for his power punches while Rayan Garcia is known more for his speed. Regardless, both boxers used all types of punches according to the moment. Power shots just tend to get more notice from fans – especially fans with less knowledge of the sport – because it’s more of a “show.”

In the spiritual, a power shot is also just what it sounds like -a force that just sneaks up on you and knocks you down – figuratively or even physically. Have you ever suddenly felt fatigued, depressed, or just overwhelmed emotionally? Have you ever felt like it’s as though the whole world is working against you, and nothing you do seems to matter?

That’s a power shot – Satan’s favorite attack, because it creates the most drama. His power punch, if you will. This has happened to almost all of us at one time or other. A sudden tragedy, bad news that blindsides us, a feeling of helplessness. It hurts. And it sucks. Like Mike Tyson himself just walked up and KO’d you in your living room.

If this has happened to you, or is happening to you right now, I have some good news for you. Some very, VERY good news.

You don’t have to stand there and take it.

In the spiritual realm, Satan has power on Earth. God gave him a certain amount of power and influence when he cast him out of Heaven. Unsurprisingly, he uses all of it to his advantage. If you study the Bible you know that Satan roams about, just looking for souls to deceive, and ultimately to conquer. He sets out to destroy. Yet, despite his power, he possesses zero authority. I’ll say it again. Satan has power here on Earth, but he has NO AUTHORITY. What does that mean?

Power with the absence of authority is like a boxer who can dole out a power shot but has no skill. Not even enough skill to land the shot. Satan (Lucifer, whatever you choose to call the Darkness that is against God) was never given any type of authority by God. Only power. Power can cause chaos and create distress, but it ends there.

Authority, on the other hand, is the law. It is ABSOLUTE. Just as the Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land in America, and overrides all other laws – federal, state, and local law – God’s Law is similar- just on a much larger scale. God and His Kingdom, which includes all of His children (who believe in him, who seek him by way of the Son) have all dominion and authority on Earth by rule of law. The Supreme Eternal Law.

Satan has NONE. He may have the power to TRY to destroy, but he can only succeed if YOU allow him to. That is because YOU have authority OVER Satan. We, as God’s children and co-heirs with Jesus, were granted this authority through the blood of Jesus. If you need proof of this, there are many scriptures to study in the Bible, and I encourage you to do so. To get you started, though, here are two of my favorite passages concerning our authority through Jesus:

Matthew 18:18 I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whatever you bind
(forbid, declare unlawful) on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose (permit, allow, or declare lawful) on earth shall be been loosed in heaven.

Luke 10:19 Listen carefully: I have given you authority to
tread on serpents and scorpions, and the ability to exercise authority over all
the power of the enemy (Satan, Lucifer, Darkness, etc) and nothing will in any way harm you.

God intended us to know our authority over all darkness and to actively fend it off and subdue it. He expects us to learn about this. Meanwhile, the enemy of God’s main goal is to prevent us from knowing this. So far, he’s actually done a pretty good job because many Christians think that they have no power or authority over Satan. Au contraire. We absolutely lord it over him, but not being aware of this is like going through life deaf, blind, and dumb – in the spiritual, anyway. Imagine being a rich child whose father left him gold and silver and mansions, but not knowing about it and thus, living a life of poverty. That is why God said, “my people perish for a lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)

To learn more about your authority through Jesus and how to exercise it through correct prayers and decrees, I recommend reading Kenneth Hagin’s book The Believer’s Authority. But most of all, I suggest reading the Bible. Ask the Holy Spirit (our advocate!) to give you revelation as you read, and you will receive it.

To learn more about boxing training for power, I suggest watching Mike Tyson, Joe Frazier or Sonny Liston fights. For speed, check out Ryan Garcia’s hands.
